What is an abscess?

An abcess in a tooth is a pocket filled with pus which is caused by bacterial infection. This occurs at different regions of the tooth and for different reasons. A peripical (per-e-AP-ih-kul) abcess will occur at the tip of a root, whereas a periodontal (per-e-o-DON-tul) abcess usually occurs in the gums next to the tooth root. The information here refers specifically to periapical abscesses.

Periapical abcesses occur as a result of untreated dental cavities, injury to mouth, or prior dental work.

Dentists treat a tooth abcess by draining it to get rid of infection. They may be able to save teeth with a root canal, but in some instances, the tooth may need to be pulled. Leaving tooth abscesses untreated will typically lead to a serious, even life-threatening, complication in your mouth.
