How Does Tobacco Impact Your Health?

Tobacco is very prevelanet in today’s society. It is common knowledge that it is unhealthy for a variety or reasons, but what are the specfics? Let me attempt to provide you with some insight.

Non-Dental Effects

First I will list off a few non-dental reasons why tobacco is very dangerous. In 1964, the Surgeon General of the United States declared that cigarette smoking is a cause of lung cancer in both men and women, and therefore advised against cigarette smoking. As a result of this, many dangers regarding tobacco use have surfaced through increasing studies and research.

Cigarette smoke causes cancer. Roughly 30% of all cancer deaths are due to people smoking. 87% of lung cancer deaths are due to people smoking. 10% of smokers (people who smoke regularly) will develop lung cancer. These statistics really do shed some light on how dangerous cigarettes are.

A raspy or hoarse voice. People who smoke have a chance to develop a raspy voice. This voice is not a desirable trait, for obvious reasons.

Dental Effects

Smoking has a large number of dental-related negative side effects associated with it. Among these include gum and tooth related problems.

Gum disease is prevealent in smokers. Cigarette smoke causes plaque to build up and lead to tooth decay. As gum tissues and tooth slowly decays away, gum disease becomes prevalent. Smokers are up to four times more likely for this to occur as opposed to non-smokers.

Tooth loss is inevitable. Smokers are up to two times more likely to have tooth loss as a result of smoking. This is due to the high risk of gum disease.

Preventing Side Effects of Smoking

There is honestly only one effective way to stop side effects that result from smoking. Whether it be cancer or gum disease, the only way is to stop smoking 100%. Yes, it is very hard to quit smoking, but your life is much more precious than anything else.
