How Chewing Gum effects you

Many people chew gum to either freshen their breath, and/ or for enjoyment. Gum is very commonly starting to be seen as a candy as well, but did you know that chewing gum can help your oral health as well?

Which Chewing Gum should I use?

Any gum approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) has been tested to make sure that it is a quality chewing gum that is good for your mouth. Always look for the ADA seal of approval before purchasing your chewing gum.

How does Chewing Gum improve my Oral Health?

  • Chewing gum can help increase the flow of saliva in your mouth.
  • If you chew gum after you eat this increase in saliva can help to wash away the acids that are built up from plaque breaking down food on teeth.
  • Studies show that chewing gum for 20 minutes after eating can help to prevent tooth decay.
  • Some types of Chewing Gum have extra ingredients which can help to strengthen your teeth, or reduce plaque.

Chewing Gum does not replace brushing your teeth, but it is an excellent addition to your oral hygiene. Make sure you buy ADA approved gum, and next time you open a pack, know that it can improve your oral health!
